Pink Gin (Saturday Afternoon Cocktail #1)

The cocktail I have just made myself is one I have read about in a number of books, but never actually tried, because I had convinced myself that I dislike Gin (and I just happened to have a promotional bottle of Miller's London Dry Gin.) Not only is this not the case, apparently, but the Pink Gin turned out to be refreshing and delicious with enough kick to warm me up.

Pink Gin

1 ½ oz Miller's London Dry Gin
1 liberal dash Peychaud's Bitters

Combine ingredients with ice. Stir; strain; drink.

Afternoon Cocktails

One thing I definitely enjoy, is a tasty cocktail in the afternoon. Not enough to make me anything but warm, but just enough to make the day a little sunnier. I, like everyone else on the internet, am somewhat obsessed with old, forgotten cocktails, from classy to fuck-you-up fast.

I will try to continue this tradition of posting a cocktail recipe as I have made it, which is not necessarily the "right" way.

I will keep these as separate posts, as well, tagged appropriately.

I Just Couldn't Resist Any Longer

One of the things that I thought might change (but thankfully didn't) was that Monday night is almost exclusively a TV night. Chuck, How I Met Your Mother, Heroes, Gossip Girl, House, and Weeds are probably all in my top 10 of tv shows right now, so Monday nights my DVR works overtime.

Here's the final scene from Chuck last week, and I still can't get over how well put together that show is.

The Perks of Exposure

One of the many perks of working where I do is the opportunity to experience some pretty fantastic performing art. I have been a web nerd for my entire professional life, but there is only so much that telemarketing, chemical manufacturing, and reliable (yet affordable) living room furniture can provide in the way of excitement.

Dance is something that, prior to this job, I have never really gotten into. It has been an issue of availability, knowledge, and I suppose just exposure, but the more I see, the more I love.

Next week I get a chance to see Max performed by Batsheva Dance Company. Tickets are still available, and from what I have been told, it should be pretty hot (I've been promised nudity). Here's a preview:

One of the events that I have been extra excited about is Merce Cunningham at 90 with live music from Sonic Youth, John Paul Jones, and Takehisa Kosugi (who you may know from Sonic Youth's Goodbye 20th Century.) To say I am looking forward to it is most definitely an understatement.

Moving Things Around

I recently had a really unfortunate mishap (or just some bad luck I suppose) that involved my home theater stereo receiver deciding to just stop working completely. It was one that allowed me to have every bit of technology I own plugged into one spot, which, in some ways, is really helpful in a New York apartment. However, one thing it did is allowed me to passively neglect listening to music casually.

When spending time in my living room—the primary location of this stereo—I would almost entirely spend my time on the television. When the mood called for music, it was my computer (plugged into my TV and stereo) which provided digital entertainment, but rarely did I listen to my records, which, oddly enough, are the only forms of non-mp3 music that I have in my current possession.

The death of my all-in-one home stereo solution motivated me to move my turntable to my bedroom, where more relaxing time is spent, along with all of my records. Since, I have spent some time going back and listening to entire albums (or at least entire sides) and remembering just how great some of my favorites are.

Tonight, as I type this, I am listening to Yo a Tengo's Painful which, if not their best, is certainly my favorite. The first side is just so fucking warm. If you read this post, no matter who you are, or how you found it, leave a comment about a record or a side, or if you must, a song, that you routinely forget just how much you love it.

I'll leave you with one of my favorites from this album.

Nannerpus, for example

I have spent the bulk of my adult life on the internet. I have lived on social networking sites from ridiculous (makeoutclub)  to strangely draconian in ratings (orkut) to current (no link necessary).

One rite of passage of any internet nerd is the registration of many many domain names, but it's just so goddamned easy. So, after seeing what may be the best 15-second Super Bowl commercial I have ever seen, I decided to register  nannerpus.com. There was a great deal of debate over whether this creature's name contained one s or two, but the obvious relation to the octopus answered that question enough for me. So, it is with a great deal of pride, I present to you, the NANNERPUS

Oh, and I will try to write in this more, though it is quite likely that nobody reads this (google analytics tells me that there have been 19 of you in the last month).
